VSDCA 2018-19: Lucas Agnoletto hits maiden Sub-District Cricket century as Kew scores a five-wicket win

RUN machine Chris Weeks picked up from where he left off last season but it was a teenager that stole the show in Kew’s five-wicket win over Croydon.

COULD Chris Weeks better his record haul of 937 runs last season in 2018-19?

Early indications are he will give it a nudge.

The only thing that stopped Weeks from posting his fifth VSDCA century since December was the fact Kew chased down its target before he could reach triple-figures.

But it was Kew junior Lucas Agnoletto who stole the show as his side mowed down Croydon’s 244 in glorious batting conditions at Croydon Park.

The 18-year-old scored his maiden First XI century, stumped after he reached a neat 100 when scores were level.

The aggressive right-hander crunched 13 fours and one six in his coming-of-age display.

“He takes the game on, he hits the ball very hard for a young guy,” Weeks said.

“He’s got all the shots, it’s just about the batsmanship, which, if he spends more time out in the middle, he’ll get his head around that.

“We’ll obviously talk to him down the track about going and playing Premier Cricket but I’m glad he’s stuck around and he’s going to have a full season at Kew.

“Hopefully I can, having been there and done that, pass on some knowledge to him and set him up for a good long career.

“He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

Resuming at 3-33, Kew only lost another two wickets for its innings to finish 5-250 on the second day.

Agnoletto and Matt Anderson (47) combined for a 93-run fourth-wicket stand to lift the visitors to a promising 4-114.

Weeks, batting at No. 6 after suffering a wrist injury in the field on day one, continued to up the run rate when he arrived at the crease.

The Kew captain-coach found the rope 14 times and brought the win up with a maximum over the fence.

“We knew conditions were going to be good,” Weeks said.

“The ground was amazing and the wicket was beautiful so there were no excuses from our end.

“If someone did get a hundred, we were going to chase it.”

Weeks played down his chances of peeling off another 900-plus run campaign.

The run machine fell 21 runs shy of setting a new record for the most runs in a Sub-District Cricket season in 2017-18.

“I wasn’t that confident going into the weekend,” he said.

“Taking on the coaching role, I felt a bit underprepared.

“It’s good to keep contributing to the side and if we’re winning games of cricket that is even better.

“I just want us to be playing competitive cricket, disciplined with the ball and the more even we can become as a side the better off we’ll be.

“Everyone needs to be contributing and that’s what makes good sides.”
