A leading Victorian Premier Cricket coach has been disciplined over a racial vilification case.

Monash Tigers coach Shannon Young stood aside from his club duties last Saturday following a complaint to CV by Kingston Hawthorn.

He resumed his role after the weekend.

Premier Cricket manager Mike Ronchi confirmed Young was called before the independent Cricket Victoria tribunal over a comment he made on day one of his club’s First XI match against Kingston Hawthorn at Walter Galt Reserve in Mordialloc.

Kingston Hawthorn later brought the issue to the attention of Cricket Victoria.

Young received a “severe reprimand’’ last Wednesday night after being found guilty of racial vilification and bringing the game into disrepute.

Ronchi said Young pleaded not guilty on the basis that he “couldn’t agree with the entirety of what he was alleged to have said’’.

But he accepted the outcome of the tribunal, he said.

“Shannon apologised immediately and unreservedly to Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club at the time of the incident,’’ Ronchi said.

“However, Cricket Victoria takes matters of this nature seriously, regardless of the context it was intended to be delivered.’’

Young is regarded in Premier Cricket as one of the competition’s most innovative and enthusiastic coaches.

He played First XI cricket for Camberwell Magpies and later coached the Pies.
