Mazenod knocks off second-placed St Kevins in Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier B competition

MAZENOD glided to a comfortable 27-point victory against St Kevins at the T.H King Oval, set up by an astonishing nine-goal second term.

Travelling to take on the second-placed St Kevins, it looked as though a win would be a tough task for the ninth-placed Nodders

However, the visitors started strongly, taking a 16-point lead to the quarter-time break, before they unleashed an avalanche of goals leading into the main break.

The 54-point lead Mazenod carried into half-time was always going to be too big a margin to overcome, but St Kevins managed to bring it back to a respectable final score of 21.12 (138) to 18.3 (111).

Ben Phibbs was Mazenod’s leading goalkicker, booting four, while Thomas Cincotta, Francis Reed and Dean Kelly each kicked three goals, with Kelly named his side’s best player.

Elsewhere, the Monash Blues had an unexpectedly large 133-point victory over PEGS at Frearson Oval.

Heading into the game, PEGS sat second on the Premier C ladder while Monash was third, which made the 30.5 (185) to 6.16 (52) scoreline all the more surprising.

Oakleigh slipped outside the Premier C top four following a 15.12 (102) to 10.8 (68) loss to league leaders Marcellin at Marcellin College.

Given Marcellin’s last two wins have been by more than 20 goals, Oakleigh did well to get as close as they did with turnovers and fundamental errors costing the visitors dearly.

And, in Division 4, Chadstone is yet to record a win following a heavy defeat at the hands of Point Cook at Saltwater Reserve, 25.13 (163) to 7.4 (46).
