Revealed: Melbourne’s cheapest petrol stations

The cost of fuel is burning a hole in our pockets, but you can still save a few dollars at the bowser with our handy list on where to grab cheap petrol.

'Record high' petrol prices will 'continue to rise'

The threat of war between Russia and Ukraine is helping drive up petrol prices, and motorists are being warned they could reach $2 a litre over the next month if the conflict escalates.

Unleaded fuel reached a peak of 186.9c a litre in Melbourne on Monday afternoon, according to data monitored by the RACV.

Evan Lucas, head of strategy at InvestSMART, said the uncertainty between the two neighbouring countries would keep fuel prices “volatile” and could send the cost of petrol soaring to $2 a litre.

Mr Lucas said it was unclear when long-term relief would kick in for motorists, as it was reliant on the unfolding crisis in Europe.

“It doesn’t matter what conflict it is … it always drives up the price of oil,” he said.

“Russia is one of the largest providers of oil to the world and that’s why we’ve had quite a spike.

“Having that level of supply somewhat disrupted to the market is certainly going to increase the price and that’s part of what we’re seeing at the moment.”

The lowest price fuel can be bought for in the city is 164.9c a litre, with the average 172.9c

Some of the city’s most expensive petrol can be found in the western suburbs, with a high concentration of service stations selling fuel between 182.4c and 187.4c a litre.

But the cheapest petrol can be bought in the southeastern suburbs.

Mentone, Cheltenham, and Springvale all have servos listing the price of fuel between 162.4c and 167.4c.

RACV recommends not paying above 170.9c a litre and shopping around for the best deal on fuel by using Fuel Tracker on its website, or in the arevo app.
