Students at Watsonia North Primary School are digging deep to help others less fortunate this festive season.
The school is collecting gifts to donate to families in need at Christmas as part of the Banyule Children’s Gift Appeal.
Student council members, including Matilda, 12, Eleni, 11, and Marco, 12, are spearheading the school’s drive for the appeal.
Matilda said it was good to help children in her community and pick out presents for them.
Eleni said they were helping children just like them.
“We could easily be in the same position as they are,” Eleni said.
Marco said it felt good to receive a present and he wanted to share that with someone else.
“You get joy out of receiving a present and some people don’t have family they can share that with,” Marco said.
Watsonia North Primary teacher Ashley Mai took students to pick out presents for disadvantaged children last year.
“It was really moving, to share that joy and the school is really proud to be part of this program,” Mr Mai said.
“It’s all about kids helping kids.”
Popular gift ideas include Lego, bike accessories, craft kits, jewellery, dress ups and sports equipment.
Banyule Councillor Wayne Phillips said 400 children received gifts last year thanks to the kindness of the community.
