A Grinch is stealing Banyule Christmas lights with police offering tips on how to keep decorations safe.
While the Heidelberg and Greensborough police stations had yet to receive any official reports of light thefts, frustrated community members have posted about damaged or stolen Christmas lights and displays.
Montmorency’s Gina Webb said her festive display had been stolen during the day on Monday, December 9.
“How despicable must someone be to steal another persons Christmas lights?” Ms Webb said.
Greensborough police Sargeant Mandy Pouw said residents should report stolen decorations to police.
“If we get a spate of reports in a particular area, it means we can send police out to patrol,” Sgt Pouw said.
She said people could safeguard decorations by using CCTV and ensuring all lights and decorations were properly affixed.
“If people have large inflatable items they should chain them up,” Sgt Pouw said.
“Chat to your neighbours as well, keep an eye on each others decorations.”
Other Facebook users have told of lights being stolen, cut or damaged, with incidents spanning several years.
One user said the same thing had happened to them six years ago.
