Eastern Melbourne’s top performing NAPLAN schools have been revealed following the 2019 results release.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.
The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.
Across the Eastern Melbourne region found Year 3 and Year 5 students at Presbyterian Ladies’ College got an average NAPLAN score of 563.8 – the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary school was Camberwell Girls Grammar School where the average result was 554.9 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.
The third best performing primary school was Beverley Hills Primary School where the schoolwide average score was 551.3.
Presbyterian Ladies’ College was Eastern Melbourne’s top performing high school. Their Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 644.0.
PLC principal Cheryl Penberthy said the girls enrolled at the school were committed to making the most of their opportunities.
“We know that we offer a very strong academic program but we also have a very broad curriculum and comprehensive co-curriculum, which the girls really embrace,” she said.
“The pathway students go through is well-known and planned and our staff really inspire the girls.”
A connection with parents was also crucial, Ms Penbethy said.
“All of the research shows when there is a partnership between parents and the school, and everyone is working in the same direction, that’s what is best for the children.”
Croydon Primary School’s principal Julie Gilbert believes hands-on learning methods have helped the school become one of the most improved for NAPLAN results.
She said teachers had undertaken extra training and worked with university experts to gain a better understanding of how children learn in different areas.
“We don’t follow programs here, we don’t believe any one program works for all students, so we tailor the learning to individual needs of everyone,” Ms Gilbert said.
“We are extremely proud of our results because we’ve worked really hard to set high expectations for all of our students.”
The second best performing high school was Fintona Girls’ School where the average score was 636.5, while the third best performing school was Huntingtower School where the average score was 626.5.
The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.
Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.
ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
