Oakleigh development: 8-20 King Street, Oakleigh plan unveiled

A multi million-dollar proposal to transform the former Oakleigh Victorian Sheriff’s offices has been revealed.

A $38 million development is set to transform a prime Oakleigh site that was once the Victorian Sheriff’s offices.

Monash Council wants the community’s feedback on an enormous 10-building proposal for 8-20 King St.

According to the council, Heine Brothers Pty Ltd is proposing to construct almost a dozen buildings on the site, ranging in height from one to four storeys.

The development will include a warehouse, commercial display area, offices, caretaker’s dwelling and cafe.

Leader understands the buildings will be mainly office space.

“The proposal is a high quality, mixed-use development which will contribute to the vibrancy of the Huntingdale Precinct by providing office and other complementary uses,” the applicant’s town planning report states.

“These uses will provide increased employment opportunities, highly innovative and contemporary architecture and public realm enhancements.”

The 1.375ha site was sold by Crabtrees Real Estate last year for $13.22 million, and is within walking distance to Oakleigh Central Shopping Centre, Oakleigh train station and Eaton Mall.

Crabtrees director Gavin Dumas said at the time: “The confidential purchaser acted decisively during the midst of the COVID-19 panic to secure the property, having the vision to see through the current circumstances and to understand the value of such a prized location.”

The council is seeking feedback by Monday August 9, but will continue to accept submissions on the proposal up until it makes a decision.
