A FORMER brickworks site in Nunawading has been earmarked for substantial residential development.

The former Daniel Robertson brickworks site, at 56-74 Station St, sold for $21.7m late last year to residential developer AusGroup Property and Development.

The site includes 4.9 ha of land that can be developed.

Whitehorse Council general manager city development Julie Reid said the site was covered by a council structure plan that identified it as a "key redevelopment site".

"The plan envisages mixed-use development of the site involving higher-density housing and commercial uses along Norcal Rd," Ms Reid said.

She said lower-density housing and landscaping could be expected along the western boundary, where the site meets existing houses.

"A component of high-quality open space would also be expected by the council."

Ms Reid said the site included a chimney covered by a Heritage Overlay.

"The council would expect it to be retained and incorporated into any development proposed for the site," she said.

The land was sold by real estate agents CBRE and Knight Frank.

CBRE agent Paul Tzamalis said the site's potential for residential development was a key selling factor.

"This prominent property, which has been privately owned by the Robertson family since the 1920s, is ideally suited to be transformed into a new residential development in the heart of Nunawading," Mr Tzamalis said.

He said the site had been earmarked for an imminent rezone to support residential development, as part of Whitehorse Council's Mega Mile structure plan.

Knight Frank agent Michael Hede said the property received more than 40 inquiries before it sold.

"Prime development sites such as this in such proximity to the Melbourne CBD are few and far between," Mr Hede said.

AusGroup Property and Development did not respond to Leader's questions.
