Heartbroken friends and family have paid tribute to much-loved Ferntree Gully man Tremayne Cassidy, who was killed while riding his motorbike in Clayton.

The Ferntree Gully man, 22, died following a collision with a truck on Wellington Rd on Wednesday, June 2.

Oakleigh’s Honour Martial Arts studio owner Vinh Le posted a Facebook tribute to “Trey”, who had been a student at the gym since 2019.

Trey was just weeks away from competing in his first amateur kickboxing fight.

“There are no words that can begin to describe the loss that we have suffered today. Our heart is broken,” Mr Le wrote.

“Your legacy will live on through the countless people who love you.

“The fire that lived within you will not be lost. We will miss your charisma and your passion but most of all we will miss your heart.

“Your kind, warm spirit, even when loosely covered by a tough exterior, always shone through.

“You were taken too young, but we will never ever forget the impact you have made in our family. Your legacy will live on. We love you Trey.”

Mr Le told Leader, Trey never said a bad word about anyone.

“He never complained about anything, and he was just there to better himself,” he said.

“He always encouraged others to push to their limits.

“He was always one of the most charismatic people at the gym, he was always laughing, making jokes.

“He is just going to be really, really missed.”

Mr Le said they had been training Trey up to compete in his first amateur kickboxing fight in about three weeks.

“So I was talking to him every day, he was sending me photos of everything he was eating, we were trying to get him to drop a few kilos; he was excited and I think he was waiting on getting a promotion from one of his jobs, so things were looking up for him.

“He was too young (to die).”

Other friends expressed their sorrow on Facebook, with one saying “So sad, we will go for a spearfish together once again. Rest easy”, and another “I’ll forever treasure all the time spent with you and all the laughs we had. You are always in our hearts.”

Emergency services rushed to the crash scene at the intersection of Wellington and Garden roads in Clayton at 7.10am on Wednesday.

Police believe the motorcyclist was on his way to work and the truck driver was working or on his way to work.

Police confirmed the motorbike rider died at the scene.

Major Collision detective Sergeant Steve Hill said the motorcyclist had hit the truck.

“The truck was turning right out of Garden Rd to travel east on Wellington Rd, and during the course of making that turn the motorbike has collided with the rear driver’s side wheel of the truck.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash continue to be investigated.

Sgt Hill said the death was a tragedy.

“The circumstances where we are currently in lockdown and everyone is having a hard time with the lockdown conditions, there is another family that has now lost a loved child that went to work this morning and won’t come home this afternoon.

“These collisions are entirely avoidable if people just take their time and pay attention and make sure they are in a fit condition to drive.

“Drivers should bear in mind the reduced traffic on the road (due to lockdown) should not change the manner in which they drive a motor vehicle.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
