MCDONALD’S says it has won the bunfight for Tecoma, with its much-maligned new store exceeding expectations since it opened this month.
The fast-food giant said more than 20,000 customers passed through the Burwood Highway outlet in its first week, and the company is confident locals will continue to support the restaurant.
But anti-Maccas activists say the majority of Dandenong Ranges residents are not loving it and customer numbers will drop off once the hype surrounding the store dies down.

McDonald’s Australia spokeswoman Skye Oxenham said 4000 people flocked to the restaurant during its 12-hour opening day on April 7, exceeding the fast-food giant’s expectations by more than 20 per cent.
Ms Oxenham said the highly publicised opening, which saw locals line up for hours to get into the restaurant, was one of McDonald’s most successful for a new store.
“People absolutely voted with their feet,” she said.
“With the positive feedback we have been receiving from the community, we’re hopeful they’ll continue to visit us.”
But “No Maccas in Tecoma” spokesman Garry Muratore said the turnout was deceptive, with a “rent-a-crowd generated by free food vouchers” handed out by McDonald’s making up many of the customers.
Ms Oxenham denied McDonald’s had distributed vouchers to entice customers to the outlet, saying only “a handful” had been given to those who were unable to line up on opening day.
Mr Muratore said the store had already created a litter problem in Tecoma, angering locals.
