An elderly man who was suspected to have been a hit-run victim and later died in hospital instead suffered a fall, police have determined.
Manningham detectives have ruled out any third-party involvement after the 75-year-old was found lying on the footpath outside an apartment complex in Whittens Lane, Doncaster on March 2.
Investigators say the man was found by a passer-by on the street about 5am, near Doncaster’s Chemist Warehouse store.
The man was taken to The Royal Melbourne hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the lane was blocked off for most of the morning as major collision unit officers conducted investigations.
A thong believed to have belonged to the victim was lying on the road near the incident scene.
Sen-Sgt Rohan Courtis said the man died in hospital on March 3 from suspected head injuries suffered in the fall.
He said detectives had determined the man was a resident of a nearby complex who had a “misadventure” and fell outside the front entrance.
“We have ruled out any car involvement … it was effectively a fall and no criminality involved,” he said.
Sen-Sgt Courtis said officers would prepare a report for the coroner.
