GP rapist: Melbourne man tells police his daughter should have fought him off

A Melbourne GP who raped and impregnated his teenage daughter has failed to show remorse for his crimes. He instead blamed his daughter, telling police she should have fought him off, a court heard.

An “evil” doctor who repeatedly raped his daughter and forced her to have an abortion when he got her pregnant will likely die in jail.

The frail 74-year-old Melbourne man, who cannot be named in order to protect his now grown-up daughter’s identity, was sentenced to 16 and a half years’ prison at the County Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to indecent assault and incest.

In describing the man’s crimes, Judge Michael Tinney told the court they were so heinous and “shameful” the man could not expect leniency for his age or his multitude of health issues.

He described how the man, a long-standing GP, regularly touched and raped his daughter between the ages of eight and 18 from the mid 1970s to ‘80s.

The man would force his daughter to take the morning-after pill on the occasions he didn’t use a condom, the court heard.

He also called her his “little wife” and told the girl her mother, his wife, wouldn’t have sex with him because they were having relationship issues.

“At one point when she was in Year 11 your daughter fell pregnant to you, you chastised her for falling pregnant,” Judge Tinney said.

“You organised and paid for her to have an abortion, booking the appointment under a false name and then driving her to the clinic … you were a GP and would have known what that procedure would involve. (But) you just dropped her off, you didn’t even go inside the clinic.”

The man’s offending against his daughter stopped when she turned 18.

But it only came to light more than three decades later in 2018 when the woman began to fear for the safety of her own eight-year-old daughter and went to the police, Judge Tinney told the court.

“Once you had admitted it (to her), you very directly indicated you’d end your life, that you wanted to keep working to provide an inheritance but would have no choice but to kill yourself,” he said.

When interviewed by police last year, the man told them he knew on some level at the time what he was doing was wrong, but he knew he’d get away with it and it was just a bit of “fun”.

He also blamed his wife for his offending by suggesting to police she cheated on him and told them his daughter should have fought him off.

“You said your daughter was punishing you, that you were confident you would not get caught but you were glad you were near the end of your life,” Judge Tinney said.

“Your conduct was shameful and evil. It was totally destructive and perverse, you should be totally ashamed of yourself, more ashamed than you are.”

The man was convicted as a serious sex offender and must serve at least 11 and a half years before becoming eligible for parole.
