With gyms, sports and fitness centres the latest casualty of the coronavirus lockdown, a Ferntree Gully boxing trainer has offered some simple ways to stave off cabin fever and keep fit.
This morning Premier Daniel Andrews announced the shutdown of non-essential services around the state, including all pubs, clubs, cinemas, and gyms.
Fitlife head boxing coach Chris Kell, who will be running online classes for his clients during the shutdown, said regular exercise was key to getting rid of the excess energy build-up.
“While we’re all cooped up, getting up and move to use that energy our body produces will help keep cabin fever at bay,” Mr Kell said.
He said prime movement body weight exercises could all be done at home without equipment.
“Pump out a set of push-ups,” Mr Kell said.
“Start with three sets of 10 with a minute break in-between.
“Then you can increase the sets every day.”
He said squats, lunges and glute bridges could all be included in a daily exercise regimen as well.
“With squats and lunges you can slow them down and hold them for longer at the bottom to increase difficulty,” Mr Kelly said.
He advised people to change up the movements and increase repetitions each day and challenge yourself.

Mr Kell said cardio was also important and encouraged homebodies to get out into their gardens or driveways.
“You can do some squat jumps, lunge jumps, running on the spot, star jumps or skipping for those who have ropes at home,” he said.
“You can do three to five rounds of each.”
He said the key to not getting bored was to change up the order of the activities.
