DONVALE Football Club will field a senior women’s team for the first time next year.

It’s the latest move for a growing female division which expanded from one under 16s team last year to four junior teams this season.

And if the juniors’ current fortunes are anything to go on, the Magpies can look forward to a bright future for their women’s team in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League.

Donvale’s under 12s are sitting in fourth spot, while the under 14s are undefeated.

The under 16s and 18s are second and first in their respective competitions.

And numbers don’t seem likely to be an issue any time soon, with potential players still telling Donvale they’d love to have a kick months after registrations for this season closed.

When the committee, led by football manager Warren Thomas, decided to start up an under 18s side last year it was because half their under 16s were moving up.

But Thomas said the younger Magpies weren’t left searching for players — with new footballers immediately jumping on board.

And now they’re hoping for senior players to round out the newest team.

“We’d love to give a shout-out to anyone who is keen to come down to training,” he said.

“We’ve got very good women’s coaches at Donvale and as we’ve grown we’ve managed to recruit some very good players too.”

Any girls or women interested can call Warren Thomas on 0419 645 186.
