A three-storey childcare centre has been approved close to the controversial 800-home Tullamore residential development on the former Eastern Golf Club site.

The $5 million proposal by Australian company Inspire Early Learning was approved for the corner of Doncaster Rd and Harcourt St by Manningham Council last night despite five objections.

The centre is expected to cater for 196 children between 7.30am and 6pm from Monday to Friday.

Two levels of underground carparking will be accessed from Harcourt St and offer about 49 spaces, with up to six kerb-side spaces to be made available out the front of the centre on Doncaster Rd.

The council received five objections to the project, mainly relating to increased traffic and parking congestion.

At this stage the proposal has six more spaces than legally required.

Cr Mike Zafiropoulos said the project was needed to service the area’s growing population.

Manningham Leader previously reported estate developer Mirvac sold the 19th century Tullamore homestead on the site to Next Gen Health Club.

But Mirvac said the controversial plan to convert the homestead into a gym would be done with respect for the heritage of the site.

The homestead was surrounded by farmland when it was built in 1896 but will be part of a 47ha housing estate thanks to the 2015 planning approvals.
