A DONCASTER restaurant will be bulldozed to make way for a five storey, 100-bed age care development.
The site, which is occupied by Malaysian restaurant PappaRich, has been bought by aged care provider Benetas.
Plans are now under way to build the independent aged care and retirement living centre on the land opposite the massive 800-home Tullamore neighbourhood on Doncaster Rd.
Benetas chief executive Sandra Hills would not say how much the site had cost, citing a confidentially agreement, but detailed the company’s plans for the development.
“The aged care service’s built form will be based on Benetas’s innovative model of care and apartment style living, where residents live with only a small cluster of people sharing a living space, kitchenette and outdoor area,” she said.
“Research has shown that there is a growing need for quality aged care and retirement services in Doncaster, which is why this piece of land has been chosen by Benetas.”
Ms Hill said plans were still being drawn up for the site but Benetas would engage with Manningham Council and the community “over the coming months”.
Advertised as one of the “last remaining sites at the gateway” to Doncaster Hill, the site is currently on a 15-year lease to PappaRich and returns $265,000 every year.
However, the lease provides for an early termination in circumstances where the lessor wants to redevelop the site.
Benetas currently has 13 residential homes across Victoria, with one in construction in nearby Heidelberg.
PappaRich has an express outlet in the Westfield Doncaster food court and a spokeswoman confirmed the restaurant chain was searching for a new venue.
