Monash voters have elected three first-time councillors and eight incumbents to office for the next four years.
The new faces include Anjalee De Silva, a Greens-endorsed councillor, (Mount Waverley), Nicky Luo (Glen Waverley) and Tina Samardzija (Mulgrave).
The eight returning councillors re-elected include Geoff Lake (Glen Waverley ward), Brian Little (Mount Waverley Ward), Rebecca Paterson (Mount Waverley Ward), Paul Klisaris (Mulgrave Ward), Shane McCluskey (Mulgrave Ward), Josh Fergeus (Oakleigh Ward), Stuart James (Oakleigh Ward) and Theo Zographos (Oakleigh Ward).
Greens councillor Josh Fergeus, who is serving his second term on council, said he was thrilled to be re-elected.
“We’ve shown that the Greens are a force to be reckoned with in the suburbs, after the Labor Party we will have the most councillors on Monash Council and we’ll hold the majority to account,” he said.
“We’re going to make sure we pursue strong, progressive policies and it’s really an incredible result – we just want to thank all the voters out there, the residents and ratepayers of Monash.”
Former mayor Stuart James said he was also “extremely happy” to be serving on council again.
“My biggest focus is on mothers including parents and families, we are looking to expand childcare and put one into Mulgrave and Ashwood, so that will be a big focus of mine,” he said.
“I’m absolutely overwhelmed by the messages of support I’ve received in the past couple of months and my primary vote has been quite substantial and I’m looking forward to another great four years serving the community.”
The councillors will be sworn in at a meeting on Tuesday, November 10 at 7pm.
Councillors will also elect a mayor and deputy mayor for the next 12 months at this meeting.
