A liquor store in Melbourne’s east has been severely damaged after an electrical fire suddenly broke out in a storage room.

About 30 firefighters rushed to reports of the blaze at the store on the Princes Hwy in Clayton about 8pm on Thursday.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said 11 units responded to the incident and arrived to find flames coming from the rear of the single-storey store.

They spent 35 minutes bringing the fire under control and managed to contain it to a rear storage room.

It is unclear if anyone was in the store at the time, but no one was injured in the incident and paramedics did not attend.

The spokeswoman said the cause of the fire had been deemed “electrical in nature”, while police confirmed the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Crews remained on scene overnight to monitor the situation.
