A popular Burwood East restaurant has closed its doors, with the prominent corner site now up for lease.

The China Bar Signature buffet restaurant, on the corner of Burwood Highway and Springvale Rd, has been listed for lease by Vinci Carbone estate agents.

A sign on the front door of the restaurant said it had been repossessed by the landlord.

“The tenant has been in occupation of the premises at … 380 Burwood Highway Burwood East, by lease commencing 8 July 2012,” the sign read.

“A notice of default was served on the tenant on 12 March 2020 specifying the tenant’s breaches of the lease and the tenant has not complied with the terms of the notice.

“Pursuant to the notice and the lease the landlord exercises its rights to immediately re-enter the premises and end the lease.”

The restaurant is still filled with tables and chairs.

On its Facebook page in March, China Bar Australia announced it was closing the majority of its stores soon, due to the difficult time in the hospitality industry.

On its website, China Bar Burwood describes itself as the largest Asian buffet restaurant in Melbourne.

“We offer you the best of Asian cuisine, prepared by some of the finest chefs from all over Asia, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Hong Kong,” it said.

The Vinci Carbone website said it was “a very rare opportunity to lease a substantial restaurant situated on one of Australia’s busiest and most highly exposed corners”.

“The availability of this property represents an opportunity to establish a new business with instantaneous recognition,” it said.

“The property is currently fitted out as a restaurant but could be easily converted for other uses (subject to council approval).”
