After decades of allowing shoppers to park for free, paid parking is coming to parts of Chadstone shopping centre next year.
Shoppers who park in the carpark near Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse — close to the centre’s planned new $485m fresh food precinct — will have to pay if they stay longer than two hours, under new changes set to be introduced next May.
It is a big change for the popular centre which has always offered free parking to customers.
Works have been conducted in the carpark ahead of the changes, which appear to be in anticipation for boom gates to be installed, and a sign reads:
“From May 2024 these 615 car park spaces will remain free for the first two hours for your fresh food shopping convenience.
“Standard carpark charges will apply after the first two hours.
“Car park C-P1 will also have 520 spaces operating under the same conditions.
“The remainder of Chadstone’s 11,044 car park spaces will operate in their current configuration.”
A spokesperson for Vicinity Centres said:
“Chadstone – The Fashion Capital remains committed to providing visitors free carparking for the majority of our parking spaces.
“In fact on weekends, about 90 per cent of the 11,000 available parks are free.
“Based on consumer feedback, we have implemented a number of different premium services like valet parking and premium short-stay spots.
“We are working towards providing a two-hour express parking option within Carpark E in 2024 to ensure more carparks will be available, in a more convenient location for those visitors to our new Fresh Food precinct wanting to do quick shop, like getting groceries or visiting a pharmacy or bank.”
