A major eastern suburbs healthcare provider has paid tribute to the four police officers killed on the Eastern Freeway, with the tragic news close to home.

Flags at several Eastern Health hospitals are flying at half-mast following the tragic deaths of four police officers, one of whom was the partner of a nurse.

In an email seen by Whitehorse Leader, Eastern Health chief executive Adjunct Professor David Plunkett made the announcement to staff this morning following the deaths of four police officers, who were struck by a truck yesterday after pulling over a speeding motorist on the Eastern Freeway.

The four officers have been named as Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney.

“Last night’s news regarding the tragic death of four Victorian police officers has caused a lot of grief and sadness in our community,” he said.

“Tragically we know that our Eastern Health family has been directly impacted through this situation and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their family during this awful time,” Prof Plunkett said.

“As a mark of respect for this terrible tragedy, flags at all Eastern Health sites will be flown at half-mast today.”

Whitehorse Leader understands one of the police officers killed was the partner of a nurse who works for Eastern Health.

Eastern Health would not respond to Whitehorse Leader’s questions, and said the organisation wished to express its grief and sadness at the tragic death of the officers.

A post on its Facebook page said: “Our heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and Victoria Police colleagues.”

The post said Eastern Health regularly worked with wonderful members of Victoria Police and were grateful for their hard work and commitment every day in the community.

“We also stand together with our long term and valued partners the @blue_ribbon_foundation in honouring their legacy – they will never be forgotten,” it said.

“As a mark of respect for this terrible tragedy, flags at all Eastern Health sites will be flown at half-mast today.”
