A can of creamed rice has thwarted a Boronia burglar’s $22,000 Christmas Eve heist, a court has heard.

Boronia man Steven Young, 36, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft in the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

On Christmas Eve in 2023, Young broke into a Boronia home which was three doors down from one of his friend’s homes.

He nicked more than $22,000 worth of items including game consoles, expensive figurines, collectables, tools, jewellery and eight bourbon bottles.

He also took $5000 in cash.

When police arrived at the scene they found a half-eaten can of creamed rice which they collected for evidence.

Young’s DNA was found on the can when it was tested by the evidence lab.

Young, who is a father of five, also pleaded guilty to stealing a bike, possessing GHB and breaking into another home.

He was convicted and sentenced to 12 months in jail for his offending.
