ALDI has confirmed staff members at its Melbourne stores tested positive to coronavirus — but its unclear if its customers were broadly notified.

The supermarket chain revealed nine staff members had been diagnosed with the deadly virus since it hit.

The affected staff worked in its stores at Epping, Tarneit, West Footscray, Wyndham Vale, The Pines in Doncaster East, Brimbank and Prahran.

Only one of the nine cases were transmitted between employees, with the remainder originating outside stores from travel or community transmission.

An ALDI spokeswoman, who declined to be named, said customers were notified with signage in each store at the time of the confirmed cases.

But unlike rivals Coles and Woolworths, the spokeswoman did not say if details of the confirmed cases were posted on ALDI’s website.

“We have been transparent with our communications for team members and our customers,” the spokeswoman said.

“In the instances where an employee has tested positive, we have provided them with appropriate support, traced close contacts and provided paid isolation for all employees that require it.

“Our safety protocols also include the deep cleaning of stores where infections have been reported.”

ALDI last placed a coronavirus update on its website on May 26 when it lifted product limits and introduced social distancing measures in stores.

The spokeswoman said no stores were presently being cleaned or had closed due to the virus outbreak.

“Throughout this time, we have been vigilant in ensuring the safest environment possible for

our employees and customers,” she said.

“It is our firm view that we have a responsibility to our employees, customers and community to be open and transparent about all matters relating to COVID-19.”
