200 evacuated after Box Hill high rise fire

Firefighters have scrambled to evacuated 200 residents from a 30- storey Box Hill apartment building after a fire broke out on Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from a Box Hill apartment block after a fire broke out at 7.20am on Tuesday.

Firefighters and police rushed to evacuate the 200 residents of a 30-storey apartment block on Whitehorse Rd.

Crews located the fire and contained the blaze within half an hour.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria crews remain on the scene to clear smoke from surrounding apartments.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.

Police have closed all the city bound lanes of Whitehorse Rd between Nelson Rd and Elgar Rd, due to the fire.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and use Canterbury Rd or the Eastern Freeway instead.
