Motorists are warned to expect significant delays after a B-double truck rolled on a busy Rosanna road on Wednesday.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 8.20am after a truck turning onto Lower Plenty Rd rolled at the intersection of Greensborough Rd.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the driver and sole occupant of the truck — a man in his 30s — was not injured.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.
Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed the truck rollover brought down power lines.
“Firefighters worked to make the scene safe with the incident declared under control within three minutes of crews arriving,” an FRV spokeswoman said.
A VicRoads spokesman said all citybound lanes of Lower Plenty Rd were closed at Greensborough Rd, while all southbound lanes of Greensborough Rd were closed at Erskine Rd.
Detours are in place through Macleod.
The spokesman said due to the size of the truck, recovery is likely to take some time with roads expected to remain closed for a number of hours.
Motorists should avoid the area and consider detouring south through Eltham and Templestowe, or through Watsonia to the north.
The VicRoads signals team is monitoring conditions and will adjust traffic lights as needed to minimise congestion in the area.
The truck driver, who hails from south west Victoria, remained at the scene as emergency services attended to the truck lying on its side across a footpath.
He could not say exactly what caused the incident, but highlighted the road camber as a possible contributing factor.
“It wasn’t speed related,” he said.
“I took off from the set of (traffic) lights, so I wasn’t even going any faster than 20km/h.
“I was just driving and I looked back in the mirror and all of a sudden, that was it.”
He said he was at no stage trapped inside the cab but simply “grabbed whatever (he) had to grab and climbed out.”
He said he had loaded the truck himself and had driven the route several times before.
He looked forward to the completion of the North East Link tunnel to prevent further incidents at the Rosanna intersection.
“The tunnel will solve a heap of issues,” he said.
“It’ll also take traffic away from residential areas – it’s just a no-brainer that they haven’t done it.
“I think it’s even more important than the West Gate tunnel.”
Viewbank and Rosanna residents Malcolm Smith and Filippo Lindo said they had lost count of the number of crashes they had seen at the intersection.
Mr Smith, who has lived in the area for 50 years, recalled a truck carrying toilet paper coming to grief in similar circumstances a few years ago.
He expected the situation would not improve until the completion of the tunnel.
“A lot of people don’t realise it’s a dead end and take it (the corner) too hard.
“Trucks go through and their back trailers don’t turn – they keep going straight.
“And there’s been numerous cars.
“There’ll probably be a few more before the tunnel’s finished.”
Mr Lindo was grateful no one was hurt in the incident.
“Imagine if somebody was on the footpath,” he said.
