Dozens of people crowded around a large tree to watch a dramatic cat rescue at Edinburgh Gardens on Friday afternoon.
The cat, Kage, an 18-month-old bengal, got itself stuck at the top of a 30-metre high tree in the Fitzroy North park for an hour.
More than 100 stunned onlookers were at the scene, with the crowd gasping when a branch the rescuer was standing on snapped, almost causing him and the cat to fall.
Police arrived just after Kage was eventually rescued by Nigel Williamson — from Nigel’s Animal Rescue — about 5.20pm to applause from the crowd.
Kage’s owner, Amit Vinod, 37, told the Leader his feline friend jumped out of his bag and ran up the tree after being chased by two dogs.
Mr Vinod said he was “unbelievably relieved”.
“I am forever grateful he made it back safe,” he said.
The scaredy cat was immediately placed in his owner’s carry bag because he hates dogs.
