A young man has died and another has been injured after a car slammed into a tree in Central Victoria.

Victoria police said the driver, a man in his 20s, was killed when he lost control going round a bend along Sandhurst St, Raywood at 9.50am, causing the vehicle to roll and hit a tree.

It is understood CPR was used on the young driver, but he later died at the scene.

Maryborough Highway Patrol are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash which occurred in Raywood, 27km north of Bendigo.

Ambulance Victoria said his passenger, also a man in his 20s, was taken to Bendigo Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
