A white ute has been thrown down an embankment and into a creek while a sedan ended up wrapped around a power pole in a serious collision.
Fireys rushed to the Kangaroo Flat scene to discover frayed powerlines and electricity cut to the area.
Police are hunting for the driver of the Subaru Impreza that hit the power pole who was able to exit his vehicle and go on the run.
He fled the scene on foot.
Leading senior constable Bill Edwards of the Bendigo Highway Patrol said the driver was aged in his 20s and known to police.
“This was a high speed crash. We will be looking for other contributing factors,” he said.
Snr Const Edwards said it appeared the driver of the Subaru Impreza had attempted to merge lanes, struck the ute and then spun out of control.
It had then slammed into the power pole.
A spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said paramedics had been called to the scene and assessed the ute driver, a man believed to be in his 60s.
“He was in a stable condition and did not require treatment or transport,” a spokeswoman said.
The crash occurred close to the APCO service station on the Midland Highway, causing the normally busy fuel spot to close its entrance and exit points.
A spokesman for Powercor said the collision caused an initial outage for 3400 customers.
“Most customers were able to be restored within minutes, with the final 300 expected to be restored by 3.30pm,” he said.
“Powercor is making necessary repairs to the network, including replacing cross arms that were damaged during the crash. Customers were kept up to date via SMS and online.”
Snr Const Edwards said anybody with dashcam footage from the area this morning should contact the Bendigo police station on 03 5448 1300 and ask for the highway patrol.
It’s not known how serious any injuries were.
