An iconic building in Bendigo’s CBD synonymous with The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery and Cafe has hit the market after the bakery closed permanently.

The building on Hargreaves St is up for sale for $5m or for lease for $120,000 per year after former Bendigo mayor Laurie Whelan shut the bakery in December, 2023 after 15 years at the location, citing rent increases and staff shortages.

Selling agent Craig Tweed said the now vacant building was an opportunity for a new business to move in.

Mr Tweed said the prominent location in Bendigo’s CBD meant whichever business moved in would be “pleasantly surprised with the way it’ll perform”.

Mr Tweed said there had been no sale offers yet after the owners placed it on the market for the first time in 40 years, but Tweed Sutherland First National was working with several interested parties on a potential lease.

Mr Tweed said it was too early to reveal who could be moving into the building at this stage, but a food-related business was “probably what the future holds”.

Mr Tweed said the site was a “magnificent” opportunity with scope to redevelop and renovate the building – although the iconic circular roof is heritage protected and would need to be retained.

Resembling a UFO, the building was constructed in the 1950s by tyre company Beaurepaires to look like an Olympic Games ring in preparation for the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne.
