Norton is competing in the under-14 boys events in shot put and javelin and is hopeful of using this week, which is school holidays in Victoria, to prepare.

“I’m trying to get a bit of training, one session, probably two, before the weekend,” he said.

“I’m going to be competing in the javelin and shot put, which were the ones (events) I was able to qualify for.

“I’m great at some of the other events but just not as strong.”

It’s been a great season so far for Norton with success at state level and strong performances recently at the nationals.

He finished first earlier this year in under-16 in shot put and javelin at the Victoria Country titles before finishing first in the same event in under-15 at the state titles.

At the nationals last weekend he finished fourth and fifth in the shot put and javelin respectively in under-15.

After this weekend I started feeling more excited for the weekend coming up,” Norton said.

“I’m really looking forward to it knowing a couple of the stronger people aren’t going to be in it and knowing what I’ve been able to do now.

“I’ve improved so much.

“This year I started a fitness program with my school and stuff which helped all the strength and becoming a bit more fit.

“It helped me get stronger.”

Norton will head into the weekend with an advantage, he’ll compete in under-14, which allows him to use lighter weights in shot put compared to his other age groups he had competed in this season.

“I’m more so looking for improvements (in my events),” he said.

“If I pull out a medal it would be nice.”
