A Boort truckie is fighting dangerous driving charges after he smashed into his former footy coach’s tractor, while allegedly travelling at 137km/h.
Kevin Pink, 30, pleaded not guilty at Bendigo Magistrates’ Court to charges of dangerous driving and careless driving after his Commodore collided with the tractor on Boort-Wedderburn Rd in 2023.
Police arrived to the “horrific” scene about 4.45pm on June 2 to find the mangled wreck of an orange Holden Commodore wedged under the trailer of a tractor, with the roof of the Commodore completely peeled back.
Miraculously no one was injured.
Bodyworn camera footage played in court showed a responding police officer speaking to Mr Pink.
“I can’t believe you haven’t got a scratch on you,” the officer could be heard saying.
The footage showed Mr Pink telling police at the scene he had been trying to overtake the tractor — driven by his former footy coach — at 100km/h.
But as he was passing the tractor turned right in front of him to enter a property and he collided.
Mr Pink said, in the footage, he could not see the tractor’s indicator because it was obstructed by its trailer.
But a police collision reconstructionist alleged in court Mr Pink had been travelling at least 137km/h at the time of the crash.
Mr Pink had slammed his brakes on, the court was told, leaving tyre marks on the road stretching for at least 104m.
It takes 68m to stop if a car is travelling at 100km/h, the expert told the court.
Mr Pink disputed the dangerous driving allegations, claiming he may have accidentally put his foot on the accelerator at the same time he was trying to brake.
The hearing was adjourned and will continue on Friday.
