A Clyde North truck driver has died in a devastating semi-trailer rollover on the Calder Highway, midway between Melbourne and Bendigo.
The 67-year-old man was involved in the deadly highway rollover at Gisborne on Sunday morning.
A Victoria Police media officer Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean confirmed the driver died at the scene of a crash.
Police and emergency services spent hours securing the area around the single-vehicle fatal collision at Gisborne because of safety concerns about the trailer’s full tank of gas.
Snr Constable Dean said investigators believe a truck was in the truck stop adjacent to the Calder Freeway, north bound, when it left the road and rolled over.
Police patrolling the area located the truck down the embankment just after 7am.
A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said three crews were called to the crash at 7.12am on Sunday.
She said Gisborne and Diggers Rest fire brigades responded to the incident, with supported by Fire Rescue Victoria and Victora State Emergency Services.
She said on arrival, they found a semi-trailer with a full tank of gas has gone up an embankment along a truck stop of the Calder Freeway, and rolled over.
“Emergency services worked together to gain access to the driver of the truck for assessment,” the spokesperson said.
“The gas company has been called to come and decant the gas, before the scene can be cleaned up.
“Emergency services will remain on the scene throughout the day.”
It is understood the driver was trapped in the vehicle and fire crews were called to try and free them.
Paramedics, local State Rescue Services and Country Fire Authority crews were called to the scene.
Snr Constable Dean called on anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
