As Covid continues to wreak havoc in schools across the state, data has revealed the Victorian regions where primary-school children are seriously lagging behind vaccination targets.
Of Victoria’s children aged between 5-11, only 54.47 per cent have been vaccinated, with children aged 12-15 at 98 per cent and 16-17 year olds slightly behind at 97.70 per cent.
Between 60-70 per cent of 5-11 year olds in Melbourne have received their first dose, with suburbs including Box Hill, Docklands, Yarraville, Footscray, Carlton North, Fairfield and Abbotsford at 75-80 per cent.
But isolated regional Victorian towns tell a different story with areas including Torrumbarry, Tempy and Koetong in northern Victoria at below 20 per cent.
Although it is not compulsory for children to be vaccinated to attend school, some schools in rural areas have been running vaccination clinics to encourage an uptake in the vaccine.
Across Victoria, students at mainstream primary and secondary schools are being told to take rapid antigen tests twice a week.
More than 50,000 air purification devices were also fitted in schools around Victoria along with 300 shade sails to facilitate more outdoor lessons.
Victorian Education Minister James Merlino said the moves would make schools safer for staff and students.
“We’ve done the work to make sure schools are as safe as they can be – so we can keep our school communities protected and ensure that 2022 is a much less disrupted year of learning,” he said.
