Dylan Coyle faces court to admit to burgling Bendigo home armed with hammer

An armed Bendigo man who broke into a person’s home in a drug-fuelled rage “never intended to hurt anyone, just scare them”, a court has heard.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A judge told a Bendigo man he will need to be “disciplined” if he wants to turn his life around after he broke into a person’s home in a drug-fuelled rage.

Dylan Christopher Coyle, 25, faced the County Court in Bendigo on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated burglary, theft, drug possession and unlawful assault.

The court heard that on March 9 this year Coyle was taking drugs with a mate when he became angry because he believed an ex-housemate had “ruined his chances” of getting into a relationship with a woman.

In his rage he picked up a hammer before going to his ex-housemate’s house and gaining access through an unlocked front door.

The court was told that Coyle threatened his victim with the hammer and made a demand for Xanax tablets.

The victim handed Coyle the tablets before fleeing the house as Coyle rummaged through drawers to find more drugs to steal.

Coyle was arrested the next day and found to be in possession of an antipsychotic drug.

He originally gave a no comment interview however later gave another interview in which he made full admissions.

Defence lawyer Mr Morgan said Coyle “never intended to hurt anyone, just scare them”.

Mr Morgan also said Coyle had “had enough of drugs” and was “ready to go to prison for what he had done”.

Coyle nodded as the Judge said it was clear Coyle needed help and support to “get back on track”.

Coyle has spent 252 days in pre-sentence detention and is being assessed for a community corrections order.

He will return to court next week.
