Cyclist rushed to hospital, now fighting for life after late night collision in Longlea

A cyclist is fighting for life after he was hit by a car while riding an e-bike on the highway near Bendigo.

A cyclist has been rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following a collision on the McIvor Highway in Longlea overnight.

Officers from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the event that occurred between Bowles Rd and Longlea Lane around 10.20pm Thursday.

Authorities said the cyclist, who was riding an e-bike, was travelling in the westbound lane of the highway without any visible lights or reflectors, and was wearing dark clothing, when he was hit by a car travelling west.

The cyclist, identified as a 38-year-old man from Heathcote, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

The driver of the car, a 64-year-old man from Golden Square, stopped at the scene along with his female passenger.

Both individuals provided assistance.

The driver is helping authorities with their inquiries.

The McIvor Highway remained closed throughout the night
