Details of a Bendigo father inflicting a series of disgusting assaults on his ex-girlfriend have been revealed in court.

Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A Bendigo father threatened to start a siege with police after dragging his bleeding ex-girlfriend into the shower and refusing to let her leave a Melton South home.

On Wednesday the Bendigo Magistrates Court heard the man spat on, hit, dragged, abused and threatened the woman with a knife over the course of three attacks in 2020.

Police said the man in his 40s, who cannot be named for legal reasons, travelled from Bendigo to Melton South via the train on Thursday September 3.

Police said the man visited his ex-partner, and used ice in her home.

He soon became violent and abusive towards her, and fearing for her safety she locked herself in a bedroom to call triple 0.

As she dialled the Bendigo man began stabbing the bedroom door with a large knife.

When he broke through the door, he slammed her phone against the wall destroying it.

As his victim was lying on the ground, he spat on her chest, pulled her hair and then put his hand over her mouth and nose.

She managed to get away to another room and started screaming out the window for help, before he kicked in the door.

Police arrived at the Melton South address and found her sobbing and curled up in a ball.

Officers found a large knife with blood and white paint from the door along the blade.

Later that month, on September 23, the man again travelled to the Melton South home and once inside refused to let his ex-partner leave.

She convinced him to leave for her sister’s place, but when she could not remember the address the pair began to bang on doors and call out her name.

They returned to the Melton South address, where the woman grabbed a kitchen knife and began cutting her hands.

The man told her to clean herself in the shower, and when she refused he dragged her in.

Later the woman tried to leave, but found the gate had been padlocked shut.

The pair fought in the garden, leaving the woman with a split lip and the man with broken glasses.

When the woman again asked to leave and the man responded “do what you want, you’re dead to me”.

But when she left the Melton South home, he chased her until she found a police officer.

The following day police arrived at the property to arrest the intoxicated Bendigo man.

“If you want a siege, I’ll give you a siege,” the Bendigo father yelled at officers.

Police said the man was rambling to himself but eventually they were able to negotiate with him and he was taken to the station.

The court heard the man had also spat in his ex-partner’s face twice at Bendigo train station, because she wanted to go to the Salvation Army for an appointment.

“I told you I was going to do that you f--king dog,” the Bendigo father said after spitting on her.

His solicitor Ennes Marcellus said his client had significant mental health and methamphetamine issues.

Mr Marcellus said it was “troubling” that the couple’s seven-year-old son was caught in the middle of the “toxic” relationship.

The Bendigo Magistrate noted the man’s criminal history, which included family violence offences.

The man pleaded guilty to the numerous charges, including breach of bail and court orders, assault, and drug charges.

He was sentenced to 14 months in prison without parole, with 161 days already served.
