A Bendigo dad who viciously beat his ex as she crouched in the foetal position said he did it because she was “drunk” and he feared for their kids’ safety.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A Bendigo mother was left bleeding and screaming outside her home after she was brutally attacked by her ex.

The 47-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to attacking his ex-partner as their two young daughters waited inside in Bendigo Magistrates’ Court.

The man had been ordered not to contact his ex and was issued an 18-month family violence order just two months before the vicious assault.

Court documents said the Bendigo mother-of-two was forced to write a note giving her ex permission to stay at her home and look after their two daughters on Sunday July 11.

The man slept overnight in violation to the court orders and made plans for a family lunch the next day.

But when the mum went to wake him he refused to get out of bed before the pair got into an argument.

The woman went to a licenced premises and started drinking.

When she returned at 5pm the man was waiting inside.

After a few hours the woman said she wanted to leave, but he stood with his arm across the doorway to block her.

When she escaped, he chased her.

Witnesses heard the woman yell at him to stay away before a loud crack.

Neighbours found the woman lying on the ground, crouched in the foetal position while her ex-partner stood over her calling her a dog and a slut.

“Get the f — k up,” he yelled.

The man kicked her three times in the stomach before he left.

Her neighbours said the woman was not moving as they approached to help but when they touched her shoulder she began screaming “get him away from me”.

The woman’s nose and mouth were still dripping with blood as her neighbours moved her to safety.

She returned to her home to look after her daughters as police arrived.

Officers said the woman was visibly distressed and still bleeding when she told them she was scared of her ex.

When police called the man he said he was on his way to Golden Square.

“I will go to jail when I’m ready,” the man said.

He told police the woman was the aggressor after returning home from a club “extremely drunk”.

The 47-year-old said he was worried for his daughters because of their mother’s drinking habits.

In June he pleaded guilty to persistent contravention of a family violence order and recklessly causing injury.

He was jailed for three months, with 11 days reckoned as time served.
