Reckless hoons on a mission to skid through every intersection in Bendigo are threatening anyone who dobs them in.
Hooning has become a problem throughout Bendigo with police warning the dangerous and “idiotic” stunts are risking lives.
And police say the hooning problem is centred at the very heart of the city, with hoons tearing up a notorious hot spots including multistorey and supermarket carparks.
But fed up Bendigo residents, disagree and believe the late night engine revving, burnouts and tyre skid marks on the road suggested the problem was widespread.
Highway patrol Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said the hooning was becoming more overt, as hoons use social media to share and glorify tricks.
Sen-Sgt Brooks said a fatal crash in Bendigo last year was the direct result of hooning.
“Most of the young people believe they’re good drivers and find out too late they’re not,” he said.
“Unfortunately it cost a life.”
And while the majority of the hoons — aged between 18 and 20 — are men, Sen-Sgt Brooks said women were increasingly taking part in the meets.
He said mass gatherings of between 15 and 30 cars were happening weekly and always followed by acts of dangerous driving, including skids, doughnuts and burnouts.
“One of the groups in Bendigo has made it their mission to do a skid at every intersection in Bendigo,” Sen Sgt Brooks said.
But resident Belinda White said the reckless drivers were “everywhere”.
“(It) doesn’t matter where you go there are burn outs, even in the middle of town.” Ms White wrote on Facebook.
“They don’t go out of town anymore. I guess because there seems to be no consequences.”
While Carlee Henson joked there was only one hotspot that stretched across the entire township.
“From Huntly to Big Hill, and everywhere in between,” Ms Henson said.
Sen Sgt Brooks said the public had a key role to stopping the hoons by reporting incidents.
But he added that some people had been threatened and intimidated after reporting the dangerous drivers.
