Bendigo arson police are investigating a “suspicious” house fire in Kangaroo Flat that kicked off with nobody home. Here’s what we know.

Bendigo arson police are investigating a “suspicious” house fire in Bendigo that threw a suburban street into chaos.

Firefighters were called to the scene after a large pillar of smoke poured out of a burning house on Mackenzie St, Kangaroo Flat on Thursday about 9pm.

The property sustained “major damage”, but no one was present when emergency services arrived.

Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit detectives declared a crime scene overnight and an arson chemist attended to investigate the cause of the blaze.

The exact circumstances surrounding the fire are yet to be determined, with investigations ongoing, but police are treating the incident as “suspicious”.
