$4m listing of Hopper St period home set to break Bendigo house price record

A Bendigo couple’s “labour of love” is set to break the record for the region’s highest ever house price if it sells for $4m.

A historic home built by an Italian immigrant family in 1872 could smash Bendigo’s house price record if it sells for its listed asking figure of $4m.

Hidden behind tall hedges on Hoppers St just a four minute walk from the CBD lies a heritage home Bendigo couple Robyn and Conrad Bake have meticulously restored, renovated, and extended over more than 30 years.

In 1993, the Bakes took over ownership, bringing the historic home into the modern era while retaining its stately heritage aesthetic — a “labour of love”.

“It’s a beautiful story about two hard working Australians who have put their heart and soul into a property,” director of Buxton Real Estate Matt Leonard said.

“It shows what hard work, dedication and persistence can do.”

Mr Leonard, who has known the Bakes for decades, said they have been “remarkable” custodians of the property.

Mr Leonard said it would be hard to quantify how much they have invested into the property, but it would be fair to say they would have put millions into improvements, along with hundreds of hours of labour.

“Every nook and cranny, everywhere you look in the property — every room you walk into overwhelms,” he said.

Now they’ve made the hard decision to sell up and downsize.

The property is set to be listed with an asking price of $4m which would smash Bendigo’s record of $3.3m.

“It’s uncharted territory in terms of pricing for a residential property,” Mr Leonard said.

“When it sells, it will be the new benchmark for residential sale price for a period home in central Bendigo.”

The “unassuming” home still retains its heritage features, with deep decorative cornices, leadlight-glazed sidelights — with the grand dining room boasting an open fireplace with a black marble mantelpiece and polished Baltic pine floors.

The property features a light-filled entry foyer, three large bedrooms with open fireplaces, a music room, a grand dining room and a luxury bathroom.

The solid brick extension includes kitchen, living, dining, laundry, a second bathroom and stairs to the basement, which houses a games room, home theatre and gym/workshop.

The Bakes also added a tropical oasis-inspired pool and spa barbecue area.

The property is set to hit the market in the next few weeks.
