A historic 1920s bluestone farmhouse in Central Victoria has hit the market after being transformed into a luxury rural getaway.
Built by the Cochrens, an early and important farming family in Central Victoria, the 3.9ha property located on Sugarloaf Rd, Axedale just 18 minutes from Bendigo has been owned by the family for almost 100 years.
The Cochren’s significant landholdings that stretched from Axedale almost to Knowsley have since been subdivided and the property is now a hobby farm.
The original homestead ha been redeveloped with “modern luxuries” while retaining its original features.
Traditional features like timber-lined 3.3m ceilings, leadlight sash windows, tapestry brick fireplaces and solid timber floors have been preserved to maintain “a rich sense of period charm throughout the home”.
“This property is not only a beautifully restored farmhouse, it’s a part of Axedale’s living history,” principal of Buxton Real Estate Matt Leonard said.
“It’s extremely rare to find heritage homes of this calibre still in such original condition, with this amount of land and amenity.”
The modern touches include a sunroom, a classic country kitchen fitted with a 1100mm Smeg cooker and stone benchtops, and a stylish bathroom featuring a freestanding tub and heated floors.
The Hargreaves Creek meanders through the acreage which also includes practical infrastructure to support hobby farming, such as a large powered shed, a weathered barn, grain silos, hay shed, and a separate studio or gym.
The grain silos are the originals built by the family that are still operational.
