Millions of year ago, dinosaurs roamed the Bass Coast.
And soon, people will be able to follow in their huge footsteps.
Work on the Bass Coast Dinosaur Trail has taken a giant leap forward, with the Bass Coast Shire Council allocating $250,000 towards a master plan for art installations along the trail, stretching from San Remo to Inverloch.
Bass Coast chief executive Ali Wastie said the world class trail will help claw back tourists to the region.
“It will elevate Bass Coast as a year round tourism destination and provide a unique attraction, by drawing on the significance of the region’s prehistoric heritage,” Ms Wastie said.
“The trail will educate users about the diversity of polar dinosaur fossils and the prehistoric fauna found in the region”.
Australia’s first dinosaur bone, the Cape Paterson Claw, was discovered near Inverloch in 1903 and fossils can still be found on the Dinosaur Dreaming site today.
The trail will be accessible by car, foot and bike.
“The project offers a key tourism experience where visitors can step in and out of the Dinosaur Trail experiences on offer and interact with local business and accommodation offerings in the region,” Ms Wastie said.
Bunurong Coast Educator Officer Mike Cleeland bought the idea of a dinosaur trail to the Bass Coast Shire Council one year ago.
“It’s very exciting to see it swing into action and it looks like it’s all systems go,” he told The Bass Coast News.
He hopes accurate, informative representations of all the local dinosaurs are present on the trail.
The Bass Coast Dinosaur Trail will intersect at key points with the Yallock-Bulluk Marine Coastal Trail which is a State Government funded path that will run from San Remo to Inverloch.
The Bass Coast Shire Council is actively seeking funding from both state and federal governments for the project.
