Bass Coast parents have been left frustrated about school uniform updates after it was announced that Wonthaggi Secondary College would be renamed due to the opening of their new campus.

Next year Wonthaggi Secondary College will open a third campus in San Remo and with it, the school will be changing its name and logo.

However, parents have taken to social media to express their frustration about what a new school name might mean for their uniforms.

One parent said “you would have to be kidding, it was only a few years ago that they changed the logo costing parents hundreds of dollars”.

“If I have to spend another compulsory $500-$1000 a year on a new uniform it ain’t going to happen,” another parent said.

The Wonthaggi Secondary College uniform costs between $30 and $90 for individual items.

College Principal Darren Parker confirmed the school uniform would not be changing but there would be a logo upgrade.

“There will certainly be no discrimination against kids with the older style logo,” he said.

Mr Parker said there will be a minimum of a two-year transition period.

“There’s no expectation that it will be adopted by everyone immediately,” he said.

“We are very conscious that families pass down uniforms or require them second-hand”.

Victoria School Building Authority said the new name would “reflect the school’s unique identity”, “inspire local pride” and “make the school easily locatable”.

Mr Parker said it’s important to embrace the future of the school.

“It’s one of the most exciting times in our school’s history,” he said.

“We are proud of our history but we also need to embrace our exciting future.”

Wonthaggi Secondary College’s new San Remo junior campus will house Year 7 to Year 9 students and is set to open in 2022 on Potters Hill Road.

Community consultation is underway for the school’s new name with shortlisted suggestions of Bass Coast College and Bass Coast Regional College.

When completed, the school will include an administration building, library, modern classrooms, gym and spaces for food technology, arts and music.
