A man who handed himself into police has admitted to stealing a car, failing to stop and then not helping after a crash that killed a Maffra dad.

Tyrone Mobourne, 25, pleaded guilty in the County Court to charges of theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and failing to render assistance after a crash after the prosecution withdrew a charge of dangerous driving causing death.

Corey Sullivan, 36, was hit by a stolen Kia on Morrison St in Maffra about 3.40am on February 5, 2023.

He was flown to The Alfred in Melbourne with head injuries but later died.

Mobourne fled the scene and dumped the stolen car on Roberts Ct where it was found three hours later by police.

A talented Heyfield Cricket Club member, Mr Sullivan was a father-of-five and husband to Ashlea.

On Wednesday the court heard Mobourne suffered from an intellectual disability and had an IQ of 67.

He was on a comprehensive NDIS plan, the court was told.

Mobourne has been remanded in custody for a plea hearing on December 16.
