The VICSES were called to assist at the scene.

Gippsland man Gerard Steaves said he saw police cars with their sirens activated.

“I was just around the (Mid Valley) shopping centre and then all of a sudden I heard sirens and people saying someone was badly hurt,” Mr Steaves said.

“It’s just a tragedy, especially the circumstances around it.

“Gippsland is a very close community — despite what people say — I’m just gobsmacked... (it is) disturbing, heartbreaking.”

The 38-year-old said his thoughts were with the person’s friends and family.

“Christmas is only around the corner and that’s when families come together the most,” Mr Steaves said.
