Top five things to do in Phillip Island this Easter 2022

After being named one of the top places to visit in the world, here are the top five things to do in Phillip Island, including seeing the penguins. See the special video.

Get back to nature on Phillip Island

After being named one of the best places to travel in the world, Phillip Island and its sights to behold will not disappoint this Easter.

Just 142km Melbourne, about 8600 people flocked to the region over summer with huge numbers again expected this weekend.

Here are the top five things to do on the island.

Penguin parade, Sunderland Bay

At dusk every night, a colony of little penguins waddle home after a day feeding their young on Summerland Beach.

Crowds have gathered on the shores since 1920, before a viewing platform was built to minimise the human impact on the species.

Through conservation work done by Phillip Island Nature Parks, the island is now home to the largest colony of the world’s smallest penguins with a population estimated at 32,000.

You can watch the daily ritual from above, or below ground or on the viewing platform.

We recommend getting there an hour before the arrival time so you visit the information centre to learn more.

Churchill Island

Take a trip to an island off the island and walk, ride or enjoy daily activities during your stay.

Farm activities including sheep shearing, cow milking and whip cracking are on offer as well as digital quests around the heritage farm.

Churchill Island has some stunning views with walking and cycling trails free for everyone to enjoy.

The island is accessible by car, bike or foot and is open from 10am to 4.30pm, or 9am on the weekends.

Whale watching

Winter is the time to see whales on their journey north to warmer water and Phillip Island is the best place to see it.

There are plenty of whale watching cruises which take you on a guided tour from the Rhyll Jetty.

If you want to try your luck on dry ground, the best spot to see the migration is off Surf Beach, Pyramids Rock, The Nobbies or the Summerlands area.

Southern right whales can also be seen in the shallow waters off Cowes or San Remo jetty.

But be sure to bring your binoculars.

Ocean adventures

Take a tour of the ocean with an underwater scooter, ride the only jet boat operating in Victoria or go on a thundercat ride to view the coast of Phillip Island from the water.

Ocean Adventures Phillip Island

Visit the Ocean Adventures stand in Cowes or in the San Remo carpark to find out more.

Visit the koalas

Get up close and personal with wild koalas at the Koala Reserve and walk along the treetop boardwalks.

Watch the koalas eat, climb and sleep through the Australian bushland in the heart of Phillip Island.

Koalas aren’t the only animals wandering around — wallabies, echidnas and native birds also roam the bushlands.

Visitors can even collect and plant a seed from the native seed selection to grow in your backyard.
