A paedophile who sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl has been jailed for more than a decade for his deplorable crimes.

Stewart Reid pleaded guilty in the County Court to charges including sexual assault of a child under the age of 16, producing child abuse material, possessing child abuse material and sexual penetration of a child under the age of 12.

The court heard Reid was a registered sex offender when he engaged in serious sexual misconduct with the girl in late-2018.

Reid took explicit photos of the child, who had a development issue and was in nappies at the time.

He also took photographs of the victim in her underwear and of him performing sex acts on her.

When Reid was interviewed by police, he denied any sexual misconduct.

Reid said he had “never interfered with a child” and “never abused any child”.

Police seized Reid’s devices and found child abuse material.

Judge Duncan Allen said Reid’s conduct was “appalling” and “deliberate”.

Stewart Reid was sentenced to 10 years and nine months in prison with a non-parole period of seven years.
