San Remo locals say they are sick and tired of the dust and danger caused by a busy, unsealed road in their neighbourhood.

Shetland Heights Rd is located in the backstreets of San Remo and is a popular access point for cars, trucks, bikes and people travelling around the town.

But half the road remains unsealed, causing swirls of dust every time a vehicle drives past.

San Remo resident Bronwyn Pratt said Shetland Heights Road is a major safety hazard.

“We have had a few near misses,” Ms Pratt told The Bass Coast News.

“A lot of people have had accidents along this road because it’s dirt and there are so many holes it”.

Ms Pratt lives in a court that’s located just off Shetland Heights Rd.

She said that people speed down the road even though the limit is 60km/h.

“People come flying down and they cannot stop because it’s dirt road,” she said.

“We are scared people will hit us. It’s dangerous”.

She claims that in May 2019 Bass Coast Shire Council promised that $50,000 was going to be spent on looking at sealing the road but over 12 months later nothing has been done.

“We have been pushing this cause for a couple of years now,” she said.

Bass Coast Shire Council hopeful Rochelle Halstead said this was an issue that must be fixed.

“Understandably there may have been holdups due to bad weather and COVID-19 limitations,” she said.

“But now that the restrictions have eased and with the increase of traffic accessing new estates, this must be a priority”.

Ms Pratt said as an asthmatic she as “sick of the dust” the road produces when trucks and cars drive past.

“It’s not good for the health of adults and kids,” she said.

“We just want the road surfaced, we want it to be safe”.

“We want the council to remember we are here, they have forgotten about us”.

Bass Coast Shire Council has been contacted for comment.
