The search for a swimmer who went missing early Sunday morning on a Phillip Island beach has been suspended.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a missing swimmer at Smiths Beach about 1am January 23, but were unable to locate anyone.

Senior Sergeant Scott Morison said there were multiple crews searching for the lost swimmer but the search was suspended around lunchtime on Sunday.

“Surf Life Saving had jet skis, boats, helicopters and a drone in use over the area,” he said.

Sergeant Morison said police were unsure if the swimmer made their way back to shore.

He said there had not been any reports of a missing person connected to the Phillip Island beach.

“At this stage, we are waiting to see if we receive any further information.”

There are no plans to resume the search.
